Description
Drawn for the "Endangered Africa" contest held by
The IUCN has listed the Cheetah as Vulnerable on the Red List of world's endangered species, citing a population estimate of about 7500 adults currently in the wild.
There was speculation that the cheetah's gene pool had become so inbred that the lack of diversity in genetics could lead to extinction of the species, but newer studies seem to indicate there is less of a threat than previously suspected. There have been studies between the genes of more rare Asiatic cheetahs versus African cheetahs to determine whether diversity could be created by breeding the two, however it seems there is now a debate as to whether or not the Asiatic are actually a sub-species of cheetah, in which case inter-breeding of the two would "dilute the unique genetic material, which probably evolved to suit their habitat".
